Some libraries have four walls and a roof. And some have hooves and a heartbeat – The Ghoda Library

Deep in the Himalayan foothills of Nainital, Shubham and a dedicated volunteer team from The Sankalp Youth Foundation (SYF) have reimagined what it means to bring a book to a child. Their Ghoda Library is a one-of-a-kind mobile library, where specially trained horses carry stories from one remote village to the next, winding through mountain paths that no bus or van could easily follow.

It is a beautiful thing to witness. Children who might otherwise grow up without access to books now look forward to the gentle clip-clop that signals a new set of stories arriving at their doorstep.

But the Ghoda Library is more than a clever delivery system. It is a celebration of Himalayan culture, rooted in the traditions, folklore, and spirit of the communities it serves. The initiative has been built with local people at its heart, making it sustainable in a way that truly belongs to the region and the children who call it home.

And this is where you come in

Thanks to the generosity of donors, we were able to gather approximately 300 books in Hindi and send them across to children throughout the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. Once the children have had a chance to read and enjoy their books, the volumes will be collected, returned to the Ghoda Library, and then re-circulated to new young readers. Every single book keeps travelling, carrying joy and wonder further with each new pair of hands it reaches.

Your donation did not just buy a book. It sent a story galloping through the mountains.
