Who we are
URMEE is a registered charitable trust working in the areas of education and livelihood across 10 districts of Maharashtra since 2013. Our projects cover academic development, co-scholastic activities, sports, physical education, health, hygiene, nutrition, scientific awareness, STEM education, skill-based learning, digital literacy, and financial literacy.
We are currently active in Pune, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Satara, Kolhapur, Solapur, Sangli, Ahmednagar, Latur, and Dharashiv districts. Our beneficiaries include rural, tribal, and peri-urban children, children with intellectual or visual challenges, children with special needs (CWSN), as well as their parents and teachers.
Our work and its impact
One of URMEE’s core initiatives is the Adult Literacy Project, which is currently being implemented in 25 villages in the Khed block of Pune district. Around 800 tribal and rural women between the ages of 17 and 65 are part of this program.
The project focuses on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy, Financial Literacy, Digital Literacy, Skill Education, and Life Skills. Women above the age of 45 have shown remarkable enthusiasm in learning to read and write. Alongside literacy classes, we also conduct skill-based training such as solar lamp assembly, herbal soap and candle making, and herbal floor cleaner production. These women are now actively preparing and selling these products within their communities, which has given them both economic and social empowerment.
How we will utilise these books
We have been receiving frequent requests from adult literacy class participants to set up community libraries in their villages. So far, we have successfully established three such libraries. To expand this initiative, we are now aiming to create three additional community library units through this Donate-a-Book fundraiser.
The books received through this fundraiser will help adult learners sustain and enhance their newly acquired reading skills. Providing access to storybooks will not only strengthen their reading skills but also spark a love of reading in their children and grandchildren, creating cherished moments of learning and imagination that can transform families and nurture a lifelong culture of reading across generations.
