Who we are
The Upmanyu Knowledge Foundation, a registered NGO under Niti Aayog, has been actively working in the village of Targaon for the past two years. This village had been neglected, lacking both government schemes and NGO support. The foundation has established a remedial centre called Aashraya, which serves 90 underprivileged children aged 5 to 15. These children, who are either not enrolled in schools or do not regularly attend, receive free healthy snacks and participate in classes covering subjects such as English, mathematics, science, and music. Sports are also an integral part of the learning experience. Saturdays are dedicated to reading and games, providing exposure to activities like jigsaw puzzles, ludo, Chinese checkers, drawing, and painting.
Our work and its impact
The Upmanyu Knowledge Foundation has adopted an untouched village located one hour from Varanasi. The Aashraya remedial centre was initiated to cater to children who are either not enrolled in schools or who do not attend regularly. These students require books to read and resources to satisfy their hunger for knowledge.
In addition to educational support, the foundation also operates a medical van that visits the village every 15 days, offering free medicine and lab tests. Furthermore, the foundation has launched a village sanitation and cleanliness program aimed at raising awareness among residents about the importance of hygiene for their health and the environment.
Access to public toilets remains a challenge for poorer households. While larger and more aware households have benefited from government toilet schemes, many poorer households with kutcha houses and inadequate documentation have not. The foundation proposes to build public toilets in the village, especially for women and for workers or visitors who may not have access to household toilets.
How we will utilise these books
The funds raised through this crowdfunding campaign will be used to procure children's storybooks from Pratham Books. The library will be open to all children in the village, allowing them to browse and read at their leisure.
The foundation aims to impact approximately 200 children in rural areas through this initiative, providing them with access to books in both English and Hindi.
By supporting this campaign, donors can play a crucial role in empowering rural children, helping them discover the joy of reading and unlocking a world of possibilities.
