Who we are

In small ways and big, Akshara is making every effort to engage the community in education. Getting access to books outside the school is limited. Which is why Akshara Foundation started ‘Cutting Tea Tales’, a library in the local Kirana shops. So saying, we plan to set up libraries in Chai stalls across Kushtagi and Mundargi in North Karnataka. What better place for kids to gather, connect, read and share. These libraries will be hung in each stall and filled with profusely illustrated and vivid stories. Stories that resonate, tales that let loose a little riot in children’s minds.

Our work and its impact

Akshara Foundation was established in March 2000 at the request of the Government of Karnataka. It was conceived as a tripartite partnership between the government, corporate sector and the voluntary sector with the mission: “Every child in school and learning well”. Akshara firmly believes in working with the government to bring about large scale and rapid changes. The programs therefore aim to supplement and not supplant the governmental efforts in universalizing primary education. We design the teaching learning material, the training modules, the assessment metrics and provide support in terms of monitoring and technology. This makes the programs sustainable and builds capacity within the school system for improvement.

How we will utilise these books

Over the last fifteen years, Akshara ran multiple programs designed to address the gaps in children’s learning. The focus has been to make the solutions comprehensive, scalable, replicable and cost-effective. All Akshara’s programs are child-centric and are designed to ensure that enrollment in schools increase, drop-outs from schools decrease and that children’s learning outcomes improve. In particular, Akshara works in close partnership with the Education Department of the Government of Karnataka to supplement Primary school programmes, and the Department of Women and Child Welfare to supplement existing pre- school (Anganwadi) programmes. Since its inception in March 2000, Akshara has touched the lives of over one million children in the state of Karnataka, India. The funds will be utilized to run libraries in local kirana shops of rural areas of Kushtagi and Mundargi in North Karnataka. Akshara would provide 2,500 books in Kannada to around 50 such Chai stall libraries that provide access to books and reading to children living in these communities.
