Who we are

Children from Rajendranagara, an economically backward area in Bengaluru, want to read joyful books. They are mostly children of daily-wage laborers and aspire to lead better lives. Reading books will help them be knowledgeable, creative, and happy! It will also help them improve reading and writing skills while inculcating reading habits.

Our work and its impact

Swabhimaan was founded by Mr. Venkatraman Iyer with the mission of serving the urban poor. Mr. Iyer worked with corporations in the Middle East before returning to Bangalore to engage in activism and community service. Some of the activities include running an orphanage for young girls, starting an integrative medicine clinic for the poor, and providing monthly food rations for the hungry. Swabhimaan networks with other NGOs/NPOs all around India to accomplish various goals. We are active in the Rajendranagara, LR Nagar, and Neelsandra neighborhoods of Bangalore. We provide services including education, healthcare, microfinance, and food & clothing assistance.

How we will utilise these books

Over 600 children are studying from nursery to Grade 10 across three schools we work with to improve the standard of education. Most of the parents are not able to afford even the annual school fee which is therefore sponsored by Swabhimaan. The children are given education, food, stationery such that they don't drop-out to work as child laborers. We have created a small library for the school children in Rajendranagara slums of Koramangala. The school supports 600 students from lower-income families, all the way from nursery to Grade 10. We are working towards improving and inculcating reading habits in these children. We have hired the services of a professional librarian to help these children. Most of our books have been donated. We are looking to run a structured program for different grades and levels to improve our children's imagination, knowledge, and vocabulary to make them more confident when dealing with society.
