Who we areDuring the early days of the pandemic, teachers from Communities Rising traveled in Rickshaws through the narrow streets of Villupuram serving hot meals to the homeless, in addition to providing weekly rations to families. More than 10,000 families were taken care of and more than 1,500 hot meals were served. The Rickshaw was free to use after the rations and hot meals were delivered. This is how Rickshaw Story Time as a part of the Rickshaw Feed and Read Program was born!
Teachers from Communities Rising now travel by rickshaw to the schools where they run English Literacy programs. At each school, they distribute school supplies, masks, snacks, and storybooks from Pratham Books, that children can keep. Teachers also read 2 stories at each school. The Joy of Reading lives on! However, there is a steady need for storybooks in English and Tamil across a variety of themes .
