Who we are
Merasi is Rajasthan’s historic, traditional musical community with a lineage that spans 36 generations. However, due to caste barriers and marginalisation, the Merasi have limited access to modern resources and opportunities. Lok Kala Sagar Sansthan is an NGO that works to protect and preserve Merasi folk music and art, and to empower the Merasi community.
Our work and its impact
The Merasi School is a one-of-a-kind school run by the Lok Kala Sagar Sansthan in Jaisalmer to provide children from the community with a holistic education that, through a combination of literacy with art, exposes them to the modern world, and at the same time, strives to protect their heritage.
How we will utilise these books
Pratham Books’ colourful storybooks are very popular among the students at the school library. During the COVID-19 lockdown, we distributed ‘Home Study Booklets’ to students to support their education.
The funds from this campaign will be used to provide students with multilingual storybooks along with the booklets to ensure they are not deprived of the chance to read and forget the joy of reading. We believe that, at a time when children cannot go outside to see and experience the world around them, these storybooks can be a much-needed window to the outside world.
