Who we are

Society for Health & Development Organization (SHDO) is a registered, community-based NGO working in the areas of education, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), solid and liquid waste management, and livelihood promotion in underserved urban and rural communities. These interventions directly contribute to improved health, cleanliness, and livelihoods in the communities we serve.

Our work and its impact

Since 2024, SHDO has been running a free library for children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in the semi-urban area of Pinjore, District Panchkula. The organisation also implements MSME-oriented skill development programmes, provides learning support for underprivileged children, and conducts community awareness campaigns on health, hygiene, and environmental cleanliness.

SHDO collaborates with local governments and CSR partners on initiatives such as the Swachh Bharat Mission and Swachh Survekshan, Material Recovery Facility (MRF) operations, and other community-based projects. These efforts aim to improve public health, promote sustainable waste management, and create dignified livelihood opportunities for vulnerable families.

Through school and community sessions, door-to-door outreach, and behaviour change initiatives, SHDO encourages the adoption of better hygiene practices and sustainable waste management, leading to cleaner surroundings and a reduced risk of disease.

In addition, by providing access to education, skill training, and reading resources, SHDO enhances employability, builds confidence among young people, and strengthens the economic resilience of vulnerable families. The free library in Pinjore serves as a safe and supportive learning space for children who otherwise have limited access to books and educational resources.

How we will utilise these books

The storybooks procured from this fundraiser will be used directly by children in our free community library to support their reading, and overall development.

We will:

-Keep the books in our free library at Pinjore, enabling children from low-income families to read regularly before or after school, thereby building reading habits and improving language skills.
-Use the storybooks during group reading sessions and structured reading activities to enhance children’s comprehension, curiosity, and confidence.
-Allow children to borrow selected books (where feasible), helping them build small home libraries and encouraging reading within their families.
