Who we are
A disproportionate number of the nearly 12 million Indian children not in school are female. Between 2006 and 2010, only 26% of girls completed secondary education, compared to 50% of boys. But we know investing in the education of girls brings high returns in terms of breaking cycles of poverty and aiding socio-economic growth—but it also improves children’s and women’s survival rates and health, delays child marriage and early pregnancies, empowers women both in the home and the workplace. Through this campaign, we aim to set up libraries in schools and organizations specifically catering to girls' education.
Our work and its impact
Pratham Books is a not-for-profit multilingual children's book publisher with a mission to put 'a book in every child’s hand.' Pratham Books offers diverse solutions to ensure children have access to a wide range of books to support reading and knowledge acquisition among children. With colorful illustrations, localized content in mother tongue languages, and easy access, our books help overcome the barriers to reading. Our books are categorized across four levels- emergent, early, independent and fluent readers, based on reading proficiency rather than age. This encourages children to read, in a non-judgmental way.
How we will utilise these books
In 16 years, Pratham Books has published over 4,500 books and distributed more than 30 million printed books and story cards (mini storybooks) across India. Our deep commitment to our mission has also seen us invest in technology innovations to increase our reach and impact. Our award-winning platforms StoryWeaver and Donate-A-Book leverage technology to scale up our reach and access, and share the joy of reading with many children across India and globally. With the funds raised, we shall set up libraries with joyful reading materials in government schools and organizations specifically catering to girls' education. The libraries will consist of books mapped to reading levels, with themes across genres (STEM, art, life-skill, entrepreneurship, poetry, etc) in a relatable and localized context.
