Who we are
The Rural Development Foundation (RDF), is an Indian non-profit organisation founded in 1996 with the mission of providing quality education to underprivileged rural children. RDF operates four schools and one junior college in Telangana. Beginning with a humble enrollment of 80 students in school, the number of children attending RDF schools has increased to 2340 as more villagers enrol their children in our schools. Today, RDF’s 5000 alumni are either employed with companies or are self-employed and are financially independent.
We have a robust sports programme that trains and enables students with the potential to compete at an international level. Rather than using the conventional method of rote memorization, RDF focuses on cultivating critical thinking skills and encouraging students to understand and apply concepts. We focus not only on studies and sports but also on the students’ uniforms, books and nutrition. We provide midday meals, a pair of uniforms, textbooks and notebooks to the students. So far, about 7000 children and their families have been positively impacted by our effort and over 5000 alumni have gone on to achieve a higher education to become sources of financial support to their families.
Our work and its impact
RDF aims to provide high-quality education to the communities in underprivileged parts of rural Telangana and help students get jobs to support their families. We currently have more than 2300 students enrolled in our schools and the junior College where we not only train them in academics but also have a value-based curriculum to inculcate values of community, respect, environmental protection, hygiene and of course raise awareness about dowry and tobacco usage.
Apart from this, RDF has seen fantastic results from our sports and athletics programmes with students participating in national and international meets every year. Our students even represented India at the Beijing Olympics in Archery. Recently two of our girls and one boy have studied for one year in class 10th in a school in the USA as a part of the Youth Exchange Study programme conducted by the US Consulate.
How we will utilise these books
With the funds from our campaign, we will get Pratham Books’ multilingual storybooks for the school libraries. We encourage our students to read the books both at school and home and allot separate periods for reading. The students are also allowed to take the books home. They read the books and share their thoughts and opinions with their teachers. Few students who are voracious readers even write their own stories in Telugu. We want to encourage every child to develop the habit of reading regularly and broaden their horizons.
