Who we are
My name is Promita Majumdar. I am a social worker and independent consultant trainer. I have 12 years of experience working with children and communities. I started Oaktree Centre with the intention of building capacities of NGOs and organisations that work with children. I conduct storytelling sessions, awareness programmes and training sessions for social workers and teachers.
Our work and its impact
We have conducted storytelling sessions, trips to book fairs and science centres for children, and webinars for teachers and parents on child development and psychology.
How we will utilise these books
In the city of Siliguri in West Bengal, there is a shortage of fun activities that engage children. I plan to take Pratham Books storybooks with me wherever there are children (nearby villages, NGOs, government schools) and set up reading rooms.
The funds from this campaign will help me get Bengali, Hindi and English books for the kids.
I plan to do this regularly so that it helps me develop a rapport with the children, parents, teachers, and communities and eventually focus their attention and interest on books and learning. This campaign will impact 5000+ children and help them grow into avid readers.
With International Mother Language Day around the corner, the storytelling sessions will be even more meaningful as the kids learn to read in their mother tongue languages. Research shows that education in the mother tongue language is crucial to cognitive development.
