Who we are
Pehla Akshar is an education-focused non-profit working with children from underserved communities across four sectors in Gurgaon. Many of the families we work with live in jhuggis or near construction sites, where access to educational resources can be limited. Through our four Nukkad Pathshalas, we provide children with a safe, welcoming space to learn and grow. With over 400 children enrolled and more than 250 attending daily, our work focuses on foundational literacy and numeracy, alongside daily nutrition through fresh fruit and milk. We also support older students in transitioning to mainstream schools and pursuing higher education.
Our work and its impact
We believe a child’s future should not be limited by the circumstances they are born into. Over 90% of the children enrolled at Pehla Akshar are reached through door-to-door outreach. We visit communities, meet parents and caregivers, understand their concerns, and help children access learning opportunities.
At our Nukkad Pathshalas, children receive daily support in reading, writing, and mathematics in a safe and supportive environment. As they progress, we help them transition to mainstream schools and pursue higher education. We also support girls with college tuition and examination fees, enabling them to continue their education and work towards greater independence.
How we will utilise these books
The books will be used in everyday classes at Pehla Akshar’s centres. Teachers will use them during regular reading sessions to help children practise reading, understand stories, learn new words, and improve their comprehension. The books will also give children more opportunities to read independently and make reading a regular part of their activities, rather than limiting it to textbooks.
