Who we are
Seva Samajam is a children's home in Visakhapatnam. The CWC selects kids for the home, and it currently provides for 30 little ones across grades. Being under-resourced, developing language skills is a challenge for the kids. We'd like to overcome this by fostering a love for reading among the children. The aim is to set up a Pratham Books library (with 125 books), which is designed to encourage kids to pick up books and read!
Our work and its impact
Seva Samajam is a children's home which started in 2010 and adopts kids through the Child Welfare Committee. It is run by a mother of two, with support from her family and friends. Most of the children are school going, and a few have grown up and joined degree/diploma courses. The kids are sincere, enthusiastic, and full of grit, and deserve to have a playing field level with their more advantaged peers.
How we will utilise these books
The home takes care of all the children's needs. They're all enrolled in school/college. The daily routine is something like this: Wake up (in reverse order of age) between 4:30 to 6 AM. Complete the morning routine + yoga, and catch the school van by 8. Return at 5:30 PM, freshen up and munch on some snacks till 6. Homework/study time till 8:30, followed by dinner. 30 mins of an English movie before bed. We'd like to introduce a reading hour into this routine, using books by Pratham. I've used these books previously as a Teach for India fellow, and they are colourful, engaging and accessible! The kids follow a routine designed to optimally utilize the limited resources/facilities available, that balances well between work and play. The idea behind this fundraiser is to introduce a daily reading hour into this routine. Ample research shows that merely having a library like atmosphere encourages children to learn to read, which in turn opens up access to a world of knowledge. The only reading material these kids currently have are their dull and abstruse school textbooks. Rs. 5000 will get them the Pratham Library kit, with 125 richly illustrated story books. The books are at 4 different reading levels, and are meant to progressively guide kids through the reading process. They're rooted in Indian contexts and also expose kids to basic STEM/Finance concepts!
