Who we are
Thithimathi Ashram School is a residential government school that currently has 206 students studying in grade 1 to 7. This school is located in a small village called Thithimathi situated in Virajpet Taluk in Kodagu district in Karnataka. It is home for students from the surrounding tribal hamlets and they require bilingual books (English-Kannada) for the Library here so that they can learn English through interesting stories. The larger goal of this initiative is to inculcate the habit of reading among the students.
Our work and its impact
I am Deepti R Bhat working as a fellow teacher through the NGO E-Base Kodagu at Thithimathi Ashram School. I work with the children from grade 1 to 7 on environmental education. I also work on improving the English reading skills among the students. I conduct reading sessions for the students studying in the grade 4,5, 6 and 7 thrice a week for an hour.
How we will utilise these books
E-Base Kodugu aims to create the future environmental leaders and also empower the students by giving them access to books. We inculcate the habit of reading through the 'Story telling Club' at the school and we also conduct reading sessions through this club. The students eagerly await the story telling sessions and we would like to give them more books to read, enjoy, and learn English. Reading more books will improve their vocabulary and ultimately help them read more books on environment and hence will empower them to become the future environmental leaders. The funds will be utilized for buying bilingual (Kannada- English) books for the students studying in the grade 4, 5, 6 and 7. We have environment as the theme and we will buy storybooks that are based on animals, seasons, and stories that have the moral of nature conservation. This way, we will ensure students have fun reading the stories while also take home the message of environmental conservation.
