Who we are
Pratham Books is a non-profit children’s book publisher set up in 2004. Our mission is to get ‘a book in every child’s hand’. Donate-a-Book is an initiative by Pratham Books to help bridge the gap between those who want to help children read and those who need books for children. It is a unique crowdfunding platform that enables NGOs that work with children to raise funds for delightful storybooks for the children they work with.
Our work and its impact
Over the years we have published thousands of delightful storybooks for children in many languages, and partnered with many organisations and individuals in our ongoing efforts to get ‘a book in every child’s hand’. Since Donate-a-Book was set up in 2015, the platform has hosted 800+ crowdfunding campaigns. We have helped get 450,000 Pratham Books storybooks to over 1 million children across India. We believe that reading is a superpower and that it opens pathways for children to explore new opportunities. Libraries are safe spaces that allow children to discover this superpower and develop empathy and critical thinking skills.
How we will utilise these books
National Reading Day is observed in India every year on June 19th to honour the life and work of Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker, who is widely regarded as the Father of India's Library Movement. He was a renowned teacher and educationist from Kerala who dedicated his life to promoting literacy and education. He played a key role in establishing the first public library in Kerala in 1945 and went on to lead the library movement in the state.
To honour his contributions to the promotion of reading and education, the Government of India declared June 19th as National Reading Day in 1996. On this day, people across the country are encouraged to read books and participate in reading-related activities.
Donate-a-Book would like to honour this special day by setting up a fundraiser to provide books and libraries to children all over India. The funds from this campaign will be used to distribute books to NGOs and low-income schools in different states in India.
