Who we are
Stephen High School for the Deaf and Aphasic and Montfort Care have been dedicated to supporting children with hearing loss and their families for over 69 years. Based in Mumbai, Stephen High School focuses on the early identification of hearing and speech difficulties and providing timely intervention.
The institution offers hearing assessments, hearing aids, auditory-verbal therapy, parent counselling, community awareness programmes, and specialised education for children with hearing loss. These services help children develop their listening, spoken language, communication and academic skills.
Our aim is to help children reach their full potential and lead inclusive lives.
Our work and its impact
At Stephen High School for the Deaf and Aphasic and Montfort Care, we work to ensure that deaf children have the opportunity to learn, communicate and reach their full potential.
Stephen High School provides specialised education, speech and language support, listening and spoken language development, and audiological support to help children with hearing loss develop their listening and speaking skills, access education and become independent. We work closely with communities at the grassroots level, focusing on the early identification of hearing loss and timely intervention through hearing assessments, hearing aids, auditory-verbal therapy, parent guidance and special education.
Our impact goes beyond helping children develop communication skills. We help them understand the world around them, express their thoughts, build relationships, access education and participate more confidently in society. By supporting families and empowering parents to become active partners in their children's learning, we create opportunities for children to continue developing beyond the classroom and therapy sessions.
We believe every deaf child deserves the opportunity to learn, explore, imagine and dream. Through books, stories and meaningful learning experiences, we hope to nurture their language skills, thinking abilities, curiosity and the joy of discovering the world.
How we will utilise these books
Many of our children have never had the opportunity to explore a book, and their parents are often unaware of how books and storytelling can help develop language, thinking and early essential skills.
Imagine a child opening a book and discovering a world they have never seen before: a colourful butterfly, a little bird building its nest, a child travelling to a new place, or a story about friendship, kindness and courage. Every page brings a new discovery, every picture sparks a question, and every story opens a window to a bigger world.
For children with hearing and speech difficulties, books can be especially powerful.
These books will first be used during therapy sessions to introduce new words, concepts and ideas in an engaging, child-friendly way. The same books will then be shared with parents to use at home, allowing them to revisit stories with their children, reinforce what they have explored and introduce new concepts through everyday interactions.
We also want to empower parents to understand that books are much more than a source of entertainment. Even at a very young age, looking at pictures, turning pages, identifying objects, following a story and talking about what they see can help develop cognitive skills, and pre-reading and pre-writing skills.
