Know more about us

Who we are

Our project focuses on providing quality education to both slum and rural children to break their vicious circle of poverty through education. We provide free primary education by establishing Open Study Centers. Our focus is on holistic development of the children.Through this campaign ‘Meri Kitaab’ we are trying to give each child a book. We have more than four hundred children with us and we want each child to feel that the book is their priced possession. With the remaining books we will start a library in all centres and this would be the start of our enriched library.

Our work and its impact

Sarthak Foundation is a registered not-for-profit organisation working for the education of the under-privileged children. We establish Open Study Centers for their basic education and holistic development. We are happy with what we have done so far. We started with six children. With very less help, in the last two and a half years, we have managed to raise this number to more than four hundred. We have got some children admitted to an English medium school. We now cover three urban slums and one village in Uttar Pradesh. Our objective is to make our children employable in future.

How we will utilise these books

We have been working on this project Educate A Child for more than two and a half years. We conduct a formal survey of the slum before initiating the project in the area. Post analysis of the findings, depending on their level of knowledge, we divide the children into two categories, Tenderfeet (basic) and Advancers (one level above basic). We set up an Open Study Center in the slum and start classes six days a week. We teach them English, Mathematics and General Awareness and Etiquette. We also conduct sports, arts and cultural classes for them on a regular basis. In the longer term, we will provide skill-based training to them to make them employable. We give a lot of importance to educating girls. Thus, the ratio of girls:boys is 60:40 in our classes. Our vision is to free the current generation of children with poverty. The only way to do is to empower them through education. Once they get employed, they will be able to take their families out of this vicious cycle of poverty. The final outcome that our venture wants for the children is the right to live with their heads held high. Since we are into education of the under-privileged children, we provide all the material related to education to the children. We buy stationery, notebooks, slates, workbooks for them on regular basis. Since we are a start-up, we have yet not been able to provide books to the children specially story books. Through this campaign we plan to gift each child a storybook which can be theirs to read and keep. We also intend to open up small libraries in each of our four centres which can be used by the children post class hours. As a team, we believe strongly in inculcating reading habit in children and so far we have not been able to do so very effectively as we do not have sufficient books with us. This campaign will help us to break this and work towards improving the reading habit of our children. Since these children stay in slums or villages, they do not get an environment at their homes which encourages reading. We plan to source more books in future but this would be a humble beginning to the joy of reading.
