Who we are
In 2003, Makkala Jagriti was created as a safe environment for children from low- income neighbourhoods to congregate after school hours. This NGO works with underprivileged children and youth through a Holistic Development Learning Model. Makkala Jagriti means ‘Children’s Awakening’ in Kannada, and this is the organisation’s vision. It has its presence in various districts in Karnataka and caters to government schools, yuva cafes, community centres and anganwadis. Their approach to inculcating confidence in the lives of the children is well established with a conducive child-centric environment and the SPICE model of holistic development - Social, Physical, Intellectual, Creative and Emotional. Alongside education, counselling, life-skills training, career guidance, field visits, vocational training, scholarship programmes, computer courses, and recreational activities are also provided. It has impacted 50,000 children and youth, transformed 50 government schools, 200 anganwadis, and employed 500 teachers.
Our work and its impact
Since 2003, Makkala Jagriti has been encouraging children and youth to overcome socio-economic roadblocks and providing a conducive learning environment to help them discover their true potential. Alongside working on personality development and leadership skills, the organisation runs a scholarship programme to brighten the futures of deserving students. With an immensely capable army of volunteers, Makkala Jagriti impacts the lives of 50,000+ children and youth every day.
How we will utilise these books
Makkala Jagriti has reached over 200 Anganwadis all over Karnataka. Thousands of children at Makkala Jagriti will benefit from reading the storybooks received from this campaign. Reading will also help them increase their attention span. As a voracious reader, my goal is to inculcate a reading habit in these children and give them a better alternative to watching television and playing video games. The funds from this campaign will help us get Pratham Books storybooks for the children at Makkala Jagriti and get them started on their reading journeys.
Let us brighten the anganwadis with colourful storybooks and make them safe reading spaces. What better gift to give than the joy of reading on Children’s Day?
