Who we are
My name is Annamika and I teach 44 curious little astronauts in an under-resourced government school in Kurla, Mumbai. With the festive season of Christmas right around the corner, I wanted to give them one of the most precious gifts - a love for reading. That can only be gifted through access to storybooks that hone their reading and comprehension skills. To that end, I’m crowdfunding children’s storybooks for our 4th-grade classroom’s library!
Our work and its impact
Teach For India is an organisation that believes in solving the education equity crisis through education and leadership. We have a holistic vision for our students - integrating academic achievement with values and mindsets, exposure and access. As I have been teaching this class for the past year and a half, I have seen the grit and resilience my children have shown despite the challenges thrown at them. Most of them come from low-income marginalised communities, and the pandemic widened the learning gap. This pushed me to give them as many learning opportunities and access to resources as I can - be it through multi-sensory teaching methods, sports and now reading material as well.
How we will utilise these books
Since my students are at different reading levels, we will need a lot of support and access to resources to get them to the level required for their grade. This is the aim of building this library. With the support of Pratham Books, we want to build a library in a classroom. Pratham Books’ storybooks are categorised according to reading levels, ranging from Emergent to Fluent. This means every child will get to discover the joy of reading, regardless of their current reading level. The physical proximity to printed books will help encourage students to read and develop their English skills and open doors to new worlds filled with curiosity and wonder.
So help them get started on their journey to explore the world by gifting them the joy of reading this joyous season.
