Who we are

Khankho Welfare Society (KWS) is a registered grassroots non-profit organisation based in Haflong, Dima Hasao, Assam. Since 1995, we have been working with Indigenous hill communities, including Dimasa, Kuki, Hmar, Karbi, Nepali and Zeme Naga families, in the areas of education, welfare and community development.

We are registered under Sections 12A and 80G and hold CSR-1 registration. Our work is rooted in strong relationships with local leaders, youth clubs, churches and women’s groups.

We manage three Trinity High Schools in Mahur, Songpijang and Purbabazari. In addition, we conduct community Sunday School sessions that provide children with supplementary support in reading and mathematics outside the classroom.

Our work and its impact

Our largest programme provides daily breakfast, lunch and snacks to more than 800 students across our three schools in partnership with Feeding India (Zomato CSR). For many children from low-income families, school meals are a reliable source of nutrition. In areas where the programme has been implemented, we have observed improved attendance, fewer dropouts and better concentration among students.

Alongside this initiative, we have expanded our school infrastructure, including the construction of a new Higher Secondary block at Trinity High School, Mahur, in February 2025, and new classrooms at Purbabazari to reduce overcrowding. We also provide free books and stationery and conduct regular teacher-development meetings.

Our aim is to keep children in school and equip them with the reading skills they need to progress.

How we will utilise these books

The procured books will be placed in the school libraries at our three Trinity High Schools in Mahur, Songpijang and Purbabazari. They will also support our Sunday School reading sessions for children who have limited study support at home. Each library will be used during the school day for reading periods and during community Sunday School sessions, with teachers guiding children through reading activities and discussions.

The collection will comprise 70% English books and 30% Hindi books, distributed across reading levels 2 to 4 in the following proportions: 30%, 40% and 30%, respectively. This will enable early readers to build fluency while allowing independent readers to explore longer books. The collection will be managed by school staff under the programme oversight of KWS.
