Who we are
Established in 2015, Joy of Reading (JoR) India is a registered non-profit trust dedicated to enhancing literacy and fostering a love for reading among children and youth. Our multifaceted approach includes supplying books to supplement existing libraries and assisting in the creation of new ones in schools. We also prioritise the professional development of educators and librarians, offering training on library management, best practices, and methods to systematically instil reading habits in children. Furthermore, our online JoR Channel features Interactive Read Aloud stories, and when feasible, we organise special JoR Hours at schools with the assistance of dedicated volunteers.
Our work and its impact
At Joy of Reading, we tailor our contributions to the specific needs of government schools. By supplying books that cater to the unique demographics of each school, we ensure that every child has access to literature that resonates with them. Our process involves sorting, levelling, and labelling books to provide a diverse range of reading levels. Beyond just providing books, we share our expertise on library setup, maintenance, and management. We also train librarians on their pivotal roles and effective methods to foster reading among children. Additionally, we offer insights on conducting children's reading level assessments, advise on executing a structured library hour, guide English teachers on utilising the library as a teaching resource, and provide strategies to support struggling readers. Through these efforts, we empower government school teachers to manage libraries efficiently, cultivate reading habits in children, and assist those who face reading challenges.
Joy of Reading's achievements to date:
- -Books distributed: Over 43500
- -Beneficiary institutions: 170 schools and libraries
- -Online outreach to schools: 220

- -Teachers trained: 1,250+

How we will utilise these books
The books will be utilised to establish and support libraries in seven schools across Telangana, including five in rural areas and two in urban locations. With the funds raised through this campaign, we aim not only to provide these schools with much-needed storybooks from Pratham Books but also to equip educators with the necessary training to manage and maintain these libraries effectively. This initiative will significantly improve literacy rates, foster a love for learning, and empower students to succeed academically and personally.
