Who we are
After experiencing the benefits of a classroom library, our 5th graders have started with Community libraries at their homes, serving 70+ children of different ages in their community. They envision that One day, All the children in their community will have access to child-friendly libraries, creating Readers and Leaders. This is to increase accessibility of Libraries to more kids at no cost, irrespective of their age/grade/socio-economic background. We require more books to maintain the standard ratio of the books in the library and children accessing the library, to read books in preferred languages and at reading levels.
Our work and its impact
I, Steffi D’souza and Vivek Kumar Singh, are pursuing a Fellowship at Teach for India, teaching and learning with our 48 enthusiastic 5th graders at Tejendra English Primary School, a low income school in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world!" These words by Nelson Mandela come to life when we think of these 48 inspiring and inspired, young minds who have the potential to re-define this nation and the globe.
How we will utilise these books
We teachers have seen them take ownership of not just their individual learning, but also that of the other lesser privileged children in their community, irrespective of their own haves and have-nots. Some children get together and teach younger children around their houses for 2 hours daily. Sakshi shares, “There is a girl near my house who never went to school. We talked to her parents, they are physically challenged and so have their own reasons of not being able to send her to a school. Now, she comes to learn at our place with full excitement and never misses a day!” Vandana says, “I want to gather all the children wandering on the streets and surround them with a world of story books. They’ll surely learn something, like how we have learned in our classroom!” Now, these children have together set up Library spaces, accessible at no cost for all the children in the community. These are our Student Leaders, who lead the community in different ways they can. Though challenges limited them to some extent, it could not stop them from turning their dreams to reality. We as teachers, are facilitating them with resources to live their dreams. We aim to set up 3 Community Libraries by January 2019, impacting 150+ children. The funds raised by you and us together, will be used for getting Books for classroom and community libraries- To build their love for reading, and encourage curious minds and well as impart the necessary skills for reading comprehension. Additionally, we are also looking for Bilingual books or Hindi and Gujarati language books along with English language books, as many readers at the community library come from Hindi/Gujarati medium schools.
