Who we are
I am a private practitioner for speech therapy at Raigad district. I have to get kids with speech/ hearing / attention/ cognitive deficit interested in the printed form of language as well as speech. As parents can neither afford nor have the access to good interesting books for kids, I have to keep a stock of books and lend them for revision at home, especially for children in the age range of 3-6 as this is the critical period for speech development. Those concepts introduced via books are well assimilated as children can relate to the culture and atmosphere.
Our work and its impact
Speech therapist (B.Sc AST 1997 and M.Sc Speech Therapy1999 , Nair Hospital,Mumbai) Working in Penn and Panvel (Raigad) since 15 years. Have penned a few miscellaneous articles in Marathi (short stories, poems in magazines, and a book to spread awareness about speech disorders)
How we will utilise these books
Work with children who have hearing / speech / attention / cognitive deficit from rural region. Those kids who have had a cochlear implant surgery / good hearing aid / good attention can benefit from early exposure to books, particularly story books. We have a technique called sight reading in which the child is exposed to whole written words without special emphasis on the spelling. This helps them remember the word as a whole and speeds up and enhances their reading process. speech is the most important form of communication and enhancing the children's linguistic comprehension makes them word-rich. I plan to buy Pratham Books in the 3-6 years and lend them to speech disordered children as and when required. This will be convenient for parents as there are neither good libraries nor bookshops in rural raigad. Kids (especially speech disordered ) love visual stimuli and simultaneous exposure of words and pictures reinforces their vocabulary and language.
