Who we are
Karwar Rural Women and Children Development Society (KRWCDS) is a not-for-profit organisation working with rural communities in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka. We build people’s organisations at various levels to encourage integrated and sustainable community development.
Our work and its impact
Since our organisation’s inception 25 years ago, our initiatives and programmes have impacted over 6874 families in 226 villages in Karwar and Joida Taluk. Working on developmental issues, we created 260 women’s self-help groups, 74 men’s self-help groups and 65 children’s self-help groups at the village level. We also created 14 cluster associations and a women’s apex body that works independently.
We helped strengthen these self-help groups through leadership training and resources. Our training is based on building life skills such as self-confidence, equality and self-reliance for those struggling with poverty and structural inequity.
As a result, 1,300 women, 370 men, 325 children and 150 youth have participated in interventions and developed problem-solving skills, organisation capacity and document keeping. After attending leadership training workshops, some of the beneficiaries participated in village panchayat and taluk panchayat level elections and have even taken office.
How we will utilise these books
With the funds raised from this campaign, we want to fill the libraries in our local schools with Pratham Books’ multilingual storybooks for children. As children come to school, they will gain exposure to new worlds through the magic of storybooks and discover new interests and hobbies. With the help of teachers, we aim to enhance the students’ reading, critical thinking, and linguistic skills.
