Who we are
The Gift-A-Library project is an initiative by Kutchina Foundation, launched in January 2019 under the leadership of Nita Bajoria, a dedicated champion of children’s literacy and an active member of the Kutchina Foundation . The initiative’s core mission is to nurture reading habits among children by setting up and revitalizing libraries in schools located in underserved communities.
Our work and its impact
Since its inception, Gift-A-Library project has established or upgraded libraries in over a dozen locations including Kolkata, Mumbai, Bihar, Nashik, and the Sunderbans. Notable partner institutions include: St. Stephen’s School, Bowbazar (Kolkata), Nargis Dutt Memorial School (Nashik), Sher’s Multipurpose Community Centre (Sundarbans).
Here are a few concise lines highlighting the societal impact of the Gift‑A‑Library project by Kutchina Foundation:
-
-We have redistributed over 1,500 pre-loved books and built fresh reading spaces in schools across regions like Shyambazar and Bowbazar (Kolkata), bringing stories, science, and imagination to the fingertips of hundreds of children.
-It fosters language development, communication skills, and early learning habits through curated collections of storytelling and STEM books in multiple languages, helping bridge educational gaps in regions such as Bihar and Mumbai .
-Beyond book donations, the project revitalizes neglected library spaces with volunteers, furniture, and visual makeovers, creating inviting environments where children can regularly explore and enjoy reading .
Overall, Gift‑A‑Library transforms idle storybooks into vibrant learning hubs, nurturing children's curiosity and empowerment one library at a time.
How we will utilise these books
The storybooks raised through this fundraiser will be used to create meaningful and engaging library spaces for children through the Gift-A-Library initiative. Each book, including STEM titles from Pratham Books, will be carefully sorted into age-appropriate and multilingual sets to suit the specific needs of the students. Once placed in the library, these books won’t just sit on shelves—they’ll be part of a structured system where students can borrow and return them, gradually building strong reading habits over time.
Teachers will actively use the books during lessons, storytelling, and language enrichment activities, turning the library into a dynamic and interactive learning space. We also monitor how the resources are being used and collect feedback to ensure the selections remain relevant and impactful. In this way, every donated book contributes directly to a child’s learning journey and helps cultivate a love for reading.
