We are raising these funds for
I am a government school teacher in rural Uttarakhand. Our school serves students from Grades 6 to 12, most of whom come from economically disadvantaged and Dalit communities. These children come from families that often struggle to meet basic needs, let alone afford books or learning materials beyond school textbooks. In such a setting, even a simple storybook becomes a rare treasure. Many of our students face significant challenges with reading and writing, not because they lack potential, but because they have never been exposed to engaging reading material in their early years. Through formal education and library initiatives, we are working to nurture their curiosity and create a culture of reading.
To help address these challenges, I started an Open Library (Khuli Library) at our school with active participation from the students. The library is managed by the students themselves, helping them take ownership and responsibility. In the Open Library, books are freely accessible and students can borrow books without the fear of penalties for loss or damage. This initiative is built on trust and encourages a love for reading without burdening the children or their families.
The story books procure through this fundraiser will be added to our Open Library collection. Students will be encouraged to borrow books regularly and read them at home and during library hours. The availability of age-appropriate, engaging books will help improve their reading habits, comprehension, and overall language skills.
