Who we areKitaab Daan Abhiyaan – A campaign to establish community libraries in Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi District in partnership with Pratham Books
For years, schools have provided children opportunities to learn and grow. But over the past year, due to school closures, the role of parents and the involvement of the local community in supporting their education has not received adequate attention.
Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi, the newly carved tribal district in Chhattisgarh, grabbed this opportunity in the middle of a very challenging situation. The Seekh Programme, launched with UNICEF’s support, involves Gram Panchayats in identifying motivated and interested local youth. These Seekh Mitras are now our learning champions. Every week, for 3-5 hours, they work with groups of children to help them achieve foundational competencies using learning-based activities.
Pratham Books is a nonprofit children’s book publisher that strives to get ‘a book in every child’s hand’. Over 17 years, we have published 7000+ delightful storybooks for children in 26 Indian languages, and partnered with many organisations and individuals in our ongoing efforts to get ‘a book in every child’s hand’.
Our work and its impactThe programme was initiated in 50 Gram Panchayats and has now spread throughout the Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district. The programme has impacted 23,000+ children in 223 villages with the help of 1000+ Seekh Mitras. Many children are from tribal and low-income communities and the programme has benefited their education. Our purpose is to keep the programme alive even after schools reopen because we want to encourage creative thinking and expression in children. The Seekh programme will complement the formal education imparted in schools and benefit both children and their families.
How we will utilise these booksWe want the Seekh Kendras to resonate with stories in the evenings, encourage the exchange of ideas between generations, and promote peer learning. The funds raised from the campaign will be used to fill a community library in each Seekh Kendra with Pratham Books’ colourful storybooks. We believe that reading regularly will help the children become lifelong learners and thinkers. The core of the Seekh programme is to broaden the children’s horizons by involving communities in education and to take learning beyond the four walls of the classroom. The multilingual storybooks from Pratham Books will introduce children to new concepts and enhance their reading and writing skills.
