Building Street Libraries for the children of Madurai
0Days to go
Who we are
Eden Educational Resource Centre is a volunteer-driven centre in Madurai, Tamil Nadu that provides science education to underprivileged children both in and out of school to help them develop scientific attitudes. We organise hands-on activities and experiments that include origami, traditional games, reading and writing, etc. We are affiliated with the Vigyan Prasar Network of Science, Government of India. A foldscope is a microscope that can be made with simple and low-cost components like paper and a lens. This makes it accessible to communities worldwide. We have trained 1 lakh foldscope users. For the past ten years, our children have made it to the National Children's Science Congress.
Our work and its impact
During the Covid-19 pandemic, school closures affected children’s abilities to read and write according to their grade level. To address this issue we opened eight street libraries packed with colourful storybooks from Pratham Books. These libraries are open to everyone and are maintained by student volunteers. Every month we meet the library members and discuss how to improve the running of the libraries. Occasionally the children share their favourite books and experiences. Read more about our impact story here.
How we will utilise these books
With the funds from this campaign, we want to expand to 20 libraries in Madurai. We want the libraries to also be used by older children preparing for competitive exams and higher studies.
Since 2021, many students who had previously dropped out, have returned to schools and many more have grown more confident. They have started writing their own stories. Through this campaign, we want to impact many more children and provide them with high-quality resources to help them achieve their dreams.
