Who we are
Donyi Polo Cultural & Charitable Trust (DPCCT) works to preserve the indigenous cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh while creating opportunities for education and community development.
Since 2019, DPCCT has established 6 Gurukul model schools where children receive contemporary education alongside learning about their language, traditions, values and indigenous knowledge systems. These Gurukuls cater to almost 500 underprivileged children of Nyishi, Adi, Galo, Tagin and Apatani tribes in remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
Our Gurukul at Rang village in East Kameng district was the first of our Gurukuls, for Nyishi kids, currently serving 175+ kids from Class I - VII.Our work and its impact
Our flagship initiative is the Gurukul programme, through which we run residential schools for children from indigenous communities. Alongside quality modern education, children learn their native languages, traditional knowledge, oral histories, folk stories, arts, values and cultural practices. We support Gurukuls for Nyishi, Galo, Adi, Tagin and Apatani communities, from Class I - VIII.
Our work has a two-fold impact: we expand educational opportunities for children who have limited access to quality residential education, while ensuring that education does not come at the cost of their cultural identity. By helping children remain connected to their language, heritage and community, we contribute to preserving traditions that are at risk of being lost. How we will utilise these books
For children growing up in a remote tribal region, access to a variety of quality books can open windows to worlds far beyond their immediate surroundings. We want to fill our Gurukul with colourful, engaging, and age-appropriate books that children can explore during their free time, in classrooms, and through shared reading.
Previously, we have procured joyful story books from Pratham Books, which were greatly appreciated by the children, and we observed visible improvements in their reading abilities. As the number of students continues to grow, we want to add more books so that every child has access to age-appropriate, high-quality books.
