Who we are
The Pehlay Akshar Foundation was founded in 2008 with the goal of providing every child with a foundation in functional English. The in-school programme was launched in 2010 and an in-house curriculum was developed to teach functional English. We have partnered with government schools in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
Our work and its impact
Over 14 years the Pehlay Akshar Foundation has reached 200,000+ students and has trained 14,000+ teachers across India. It has expanded to include programmes such as: -In-Classroom Teaching: an eight-year-long functional English programme for government schools for grades 1st to 8th either online or in-person during school hours. -Train The Teachers: an immersive, experiential and interactive capacity building workshop with weekly interactions to improve teaching practices and enable better learning outcomes. -Digital initiatives: in partnership with MSCERT and DD Sahyadri, our English classrooms were telecasted to homes in Maharashtra and Goa from January to July 2021 during the Covid-19 lockdown. -A Story A Day: a bank of simple, fun and engaging English stories in video format for children aged 5-13 years. They are recorded by volunteers and are available on social media platforms. -Pehlay Akshar App: digital tools to support and provide continuous learning opportunities for students and teachers.
How we will utilise these books
This Daan Utsav we are crowdfunding storybooks for our learning room intervention which is an interactive space where good infrastructure, resources and skilled personnel come together to build English literacy and impart essential lifeskills to students. In this programme students will be the center of all our initiatives. It is a collaborative effort between teachers, government officials and Pehlay Akshar members to drive systemic transformation in government schools. Celebrate India’s biggest and weeklong festival of giving and donate to our campaign to help us transform our children into lifelong readers.
