Who we are
We are a class of 36, 3rd grade girls studying in a government school in Delhi. We as a class have achieved a growth of 1.2 years since June last year. I have introduced the class to the power of books and how self learning can be so much fun. Now we need more books to keep our reading flame glowing.
Our work and its impact
I am Saket Sinha, Fellow at TEACH FOR INDIA. I did my schooling at my native town Patna, following which I moved to Bangalore to study Information Science and Engg. After completion of my degree I joined Tata Consultancy Services, where I worked for 9 months before joining Samsung Research India - Bangalore as software engineer. During my 4+ year stint with the well-paying IT industry, I found myself to be constantly asking myself about the impact of my work for India and humanity. After a lot of contemplation, I quit my Job at Samsung to work full time as a Fellow @ TEACH FOR INDIA. Here I am teaching 36 girls in a low income community of East Delhi. This Fellowship is a 2 year full time commitment, my girls in one year with amazing hard work have reached a state where they can independently read and comprehend.
How we will utilise these books
With my kids now having reached a level where they can read and comprehend on their own. I am trying to build a culture of happy reading in the class where students have an appetite for reading. With the belief - "A self driven learning will enable the students to take ownership of their own learning." The funds will be used to buy graded English and Hindi library books. Which will enable all the students to read at their reading level. If this culture is set, I am sure of students achieving avg. class growth of 2 years form where they started.
