Who we are
St. Jude India ChildCare Centres (St. Judes or SJICC) provides a ‘home away from home’ for children undergoing cancer treatment. These children, accompanied by their parents, come from small villages and distant towns where medical treatment for cancer is not available. St. Judes provides free accommodation and holistic support to these children undergoing cancer treatment to improve their chance of surviving the disease, and leading a full, healthy, happy life.
Our work and its impact
St. Judes provides cost-free accommodation to children who come from smaller towns and villages to bigger cities for their cancer treatment. Apart from providing a hygienic place to stay, St. Judes also offers them nutritious ration that is replenished regularly, transport facilities to and from the hospital, recreational activities to help keep their minds off the stress of the treatment, value-based education, and counseling sessions for children and parents. The organization started in 2006 with 8 centers in Mumbai and has seen over 20,000 admissions since. Today, it is present in nine cities across India, with 38 centers that can accommodate over 475 children, and their families.
How we will utilise these books
Funds raised through this campaign will go towards getting storybooks from Pratham Books for the children at our centres. We will include these books in our lesson plans as part of the syllabus to encourage them to read more. The books will also be available for whenever they want to read to improve comprehension and vocabulary. Having books in different languages will also help the parents connect with their children by reading to them. We are hoping that through these books, we are able to expand the child’s imagination and knowledge.
