Who we are
Bewajah Samiti is a Lucknow-based organisation working with children in government schools and underserved communities through theatre, storytelling, arts and child-centred learning. Through our OpenUp Theatre Arts programme, we use theatre, stories, movement, games and creative expression to help children build confidence, communication skills, imagination, empathy and other social-emotional skills.
We work with children from Classes 3–8 in government schools and community learning spaces. Many of the children we work with have limited access to quality children's literature and opportunities to read for pleasure.
We believe that stories can open up new worlds for children. By bringing good-quality, age-appropriate children's books into schools, we aim to nurture joyful reading habits while connecting books with our theatre and storytelling practice.
Our work and its impact
Through OpenUp Theatre Arts, we work with children in government schools using theatre, storytelling, movement, games, art and creative activities as learning tools. Our sessions create opportunities for children to express themselves, work together, communicate their ideas and emotions, develop confidence, and engage with learning in joyful and meaningful ways.
Stories and books are an important part of this approach. Reading aloud, retelling stories, creating characters and scenes, and transforming stories into theatre give children opportunities to engage with language, imagination, listening and communication in creative ways.
We work particularly with children who have limited access to books and creative learning opportunities. By bringing theatre, storytelling and reading together, we aim to make school spaces where children can discover the joy of reading, imagining and creating.
How we will utilise these books
The books will become part of reading libraries and storytelling resources in the government schools where our OpenUp Theatre Arts programme is running.
Children will have regular opportunities to browse and read the books during reading sessions, storytelling circles and theatre classes. Facilitators will also use selected stories as starting points for theatre activities such as role-play, character creation, improvisation, movement and story retelling.
We will procure a mix of Hindi and English books across different reading levels so that children with varied reading abilities can find books they can engage with independently as well as with support.
The aim is to build a sustained culture of reading, rather than provide books for a one-time event. The collection will remain accessible to children through the school/library and become a continuing resource for our reading and theatre programme.
