Who we are
ATSWA Trust is a registered non-profit working since 1997 to empower marginalized communities in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Registered in 2005, we provide residential care for orphans, semi-orphans, and children affected by poverty and HIV, while running Resource Centres for adolescent girls from Dalit, tribal, and fisherfolk families. Gender equity lies at the heart of our work. Through safe spaces, after-school learning, skill training, and leadership development, we ensure girls grow with dignity and equal opportunity. Simultaneously, our Children’s Homes and community programs support boys and children with special needs, ensuring that no child is left behind.
Our mission is to create lasting solutions to poverty and inequality through education, protection, and empowerment. With statutory approvals including 12A, 80G, and FCRA, we are able to partner with national and international donors to maximize our impact.
Our work and its impact
ATSWA Trust works with children and marginalized communities in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to break cycles of poverty, inequality, and social exclusion. Our focus areas include child protection, education, women’s empowerment, and livelihood development. We run children’s homes along with community-based resource centres.
By providing safe spaces, education support, and leadership opportunities, we ensure that girls and boys grow with dignity and equal opportunity. Many of the children we serve are first-generation learners, vulnerable to school dropout and child labour. Through our interventions, they are supported to continue their education, build confidence, and aspire to a brighter future.
Our impact is two-fold: protecting children from exploitation and empowering them with tools—like literacy, skills, and self-belief. Today, ATSWA Trust supports over 735 children across Chennai, Thiruvallur, and Pulicat, building pathways to literacy, livelihood, and leadership. We believe that access to education—and especially to books—can transform not just individual lives, but entire communities.
How we will utilise these books
The books raised will become part of our community libraries and structured reading programmes at two Resource Centres in Pulicat and Red Hills, serving 600 adolescent girls, as well as in the libraries of our three Children’s Homes, supporting 135 children.
They will be used for daily reading sessions, storytelling circles, and after-school programmes that will improve language skills and imagination. Younger children will benefit from Level 1 and 2 books for early reading, while older girls will engage with Level 3 materials to build independent reading habits and critical thinking.
Books will also support life-skills sessions and gender workshops, where stories of strong female characters inspire girls to see themselves as leaders. For our children, books are not only a source of joy—they are tools of empowerment, helping them stay in school, dream bigger, and create change in their communities.
