Who we are
Suburban Reading Club is one of the oldest libraries in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. In the year 1888, The Suburban Reading Club was founded in a small room of the Narkaldanga High School in Beliaghata Narkeldanga Area. The legendary personalities of this area Sir Gurudas Banerjee, Raja Rajendralal Mitra, Rakhal Chandra Ghosh and Harish Chandra Chakraborty, a dedicated teacher of the School decided to open a library for this eastern part of the then suburban Calcutta.
Our work and its impact
At our 135-year-old library, we pride ourselves on fostering a vibrant community of over 800 active members. Through our diverse collection of books and educational and recreational programs, we serve as a hub for lifelong learning, cultural enrichment, and intellectual exploration. Our work impacts society by providing equitable access to information, promoting literacy, and fostering a sense of community connection and belonging. Whether it's hosting author talks, or simply providing a quiet space for contemplation, our library plays a vital role in enriching the lives of individuals and strengthening the fabric of our society.
How we will utilise these books
The storybooks by Pratham Books acquired through the contributions will significantly enhance our library's collection, benefiting our young members. These resources will be instrumental in promoting literacy skills, fostering cognitive development, and offering children exposure to diverse narratives, knowledge, and perspectives. By delving into the realms of imagination, these books will play a pivotal role in shaping the minds and hearts of our youngest community members. Your support is pivotal in nurturing the upcoming generation of readers, thinkers, and leaders, thus ensuring a brighter future for society at large.
