Who we are
17000 ft Foundation is dedicated to improving education in the most remote and inaccessible villages of the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). By strengthening the existing systems, 17000ft aims to stem the exodus of the indigenous communities to faraway cities. Our programmes focus on improving education in government schools, creating livelihood opportunities, and generating exposure through interactions with the outside world. Today, our work spans Leh and Kargil districts in Ladakh and north and east districts in Sikkim. We aim to impact other remote and, inaccessible areas of the Indian Himalayan Region in the coming years.
Our work and its impact
We work to improve the access and quality of education in remote mountain hamlets to ensure that no child is ever forced to leave their home in the pursuit of a good education. Our foundation has transformed the quality of education in 250+ remote government schools, benefiting 50,000+ children. Our projects range from upgrading school infrastructure, providing better learning resources, mobilising communities, building the capacity of teachers and improving pedagogies. With quality education near their homes, these children stay with their families and grow up in a secure environment. It also helps in conserving the communities’ heritage.
How we will utilise these books
At 17000 ft, we believe that a school library is not just a collection of books, but a means of helping young students improve their reading and consequently their academic performance. Daan Utsav or, the Joy of Giving Week is celebrated every year in India from October 2nd to 8th. The funds from our Daan Utsav campaign will help us build libraries in remote regions like Kargil where the availability of books become all the more important to first-generation learners who struggle with access to even mainstream resources like smartphones, TVs and the Internet. The books in the libraries will be used for the regular reading and monitoring sessions that are conducted at each of the remote schools through our facilitators and visiting volunteers. The excitement, exposure and learning derived by the children through these visits have been the single largest factor contributing to the increased presence and use of storybooks across Ladakh and Sikkim. The students are encouraged to use and borrow the books regularly, thus improving their vocabulary and inculcating a reading habit.
