Who we are
Vidyaniketan Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Ashok Nagar caters to about 500 students from kindergarten to class XII. The majority of the students studying here are first-generation learners coming from working class and underprivileged backgrounds. The main aim of the School is to provide a safe, nurturing space and conducive environment to make learning fun and interesting for students.
Our work and its impact
1. Collaboration with Teach For India - It is a programme that provides an opportunity to India’s brightest and graduates/post graduates to serve as full-time teachers to children from low-income communities. 2. Teaching Resources - Transformational Academic Programme or TAP was designed by the Madhi Foundation to contribute to a child’s intellectual and emotional development and mitigate the impact of socio-economic disadvantages on education. In 2017-18 Vidyaniketan implemented TAP in Classes I, II and III. TAP ensures continuous support to the teachers in all subjects with necessary resources. 3. Khel Planet@Vidyaniketan - in association with this NGO Vidyaniketan encourages children to learn through toys and games. Khel Planet has collected a library of board games that students can play. It’s aimed at providing the children with not just an improved vocabulary but also with essential life skills. 4. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) – Thrive Foundation is an NGO that strives to provide positive, preventive, and promotive mental health to society. The aim of the organisation is to impart life skills to students from low-income schools and enable children to write an alternative narrative and become responsible human beings in society.
How we will utilise these books
The Vidyaniketan children do not come from households where there are many books nor do they see their peers read. The school wants to make children read for joy rather than read textbooks for exams. Our school library was created in 2010 which was then relocated, and redesigned in 2014 by students of class IV. This year, to celebrate Daan Utsav we are raising funds to get new, colourful storybooks for the school library. Daan Utsav or, the Joy of Giving Week is celebrated every year in India from October 2nd to 8th and is India’s biggest festival of giving during which people from all over the country join hands to perform acts of kindness. The new set of books would help in supplementing our school library, enabling students to read a whole set of new books and bring about consistency in their reading habits.
