Who we are
Vidyaniketan Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Ashok Nagar, Chennai caters to about 500 students from kindergarten to class 12th. The majority of the students are first-generation learners from underprivileged backgrounds. The main aim of the school is to provide a safe, nurturing space and conducive environment to make learning fun and interesting for students.
Our work and its impact
1. We have collaborated with Teach For India - a programme that provides India’s brightest graduates/post-graduates opportunities to serve as full-time teachers to children from low-income communities.
2. Transformational Academic Programme or TAP was designed by the Madhi Foundation to contribute to a child’s intellectual and emotional development and mitigate the negative impact of socioeconomic disadvantages on their education. Vidyaniketan implemented TAP for classes 1st to 3rd in 2017-18. TAP ensures continuous support to the teachers in all subjects with necessary resources.
3. Khel Planet at Vidyaniketan - in association with this NGO Vidyaniketan encourages children to learn through play. Khel Planet has collected a library of board games that students can play. It is aimed at providing the children with not just an improved vocabulary but also life skills.
4. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) - Thrive Foundation is an NGO that strives to provide positive, preventive and promotive mental health to society. The aim of the organisation is to impart life skills to students from low-income schools and enable them to become responsible human beings in society.
How we will utilise these books
The Vidyaniketan children do not come from households where there are many books, nor do they see their peers read. The school wants to help the children read for joy rather than just to improve their academics. Our school library was created in 2010 which was then relocated and redesigned in 2014 by students of class 4th. The funds from our campaign will help us get new storybooks from Pratham Books and supplement our school library to encourage our students to explore new worlds and bring consistency to their reading habits.
