Who we are
An initiative of Pathimba Foundation, Reading Keeda Library works with the vision of making books accessible to underprivileged children. We started in 2014 as a summer library with 150 books. As of today, our library has more than 5000 books and magazines for kids as well as adults, across genres in English, Hindi and Marathi and we are open 365 days of the year. In a span of eight years, we have worked with around 400 kids through various events, sessions, workshops, book club meetings, quiz events, storytelling sessions and community outreach programmes. Reading Keeda Library is registered under Pathimba Foundation– a section 8 company.
Our work and its impact
We run two library centres, one of which is part of the Community Outreach Programme in an urban slum in Kachipura, Nagpur. We also conduct SpellBee, Weave-A-Story, Library Treasure Hunt, storytelling sessions as well as block printing and aeroplane-making sessions and sessions by geologists, naturalists, etc.to provide education to underprivileged children.
Both of our library centres are aligned with our mission of making books and free libraries easily accessible for underprivileged children at no cost. We also conduct storytelling sessions every weekend with the kids from this slum. The sessions are followed by conversations about the stories, games, songs and activities. We also run an online monthly Teens Book Club which is free and open for all kids aged 12 to 18. This is a monthly event where teens from different cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Trivandrum, Nagpur, Amravati, etc, participate in discussions around books of various themes. All our programmes are designed with the aim of promoting the holistic development of the kids and propelling them towards becoming critical thinkers.
How we will utilise these books
The books we get from this campaign will be used to get delightful storybooks for the free urban slum library we run at Kachipura, Nagpur. Kachipura is an urban slum where families earn their living primarily from daily wages and low-income jobs. Most of the kids here are second-generation readers in their families. Through our Community Outreach Programme, we have set up this free library exclusively for the underprivileged children of Kachipura. We also conduct story-telling sessions every weekend followed by conversations, games and songs. Access to and reading books is still a privilege and novelty for these kids. Through this campaign, we hope to bridge this gap and introduce the joy of reading to as many children as possible.
