Who we are
In 2003, Makkala Jagriti was created as a safe environment for children from low-income neighbourhoods to congregate after school hours. This NGO works with underprivileged children and youth through a Holistic Development Learning Model. Makkala Jagriti means ‘Children’s Awakening’ in Kannada, and this is the organisation’s vision. It has its presence in various districts in Karnataka and caters to government schools, yuva cafes, community centres and anganwadis. Their approach to inculcating confidence in the lives of the children is well established with a conducive child-centric environment and the SPICE model of holistic development - Social, Physical, Intellectual, Creative and Emotional. Alongside education, counselling, life-skills training, career guidance, field visits, vocational training, scholarship programmes, computer courses, and recreational activities are also provided. It has impacted 50,000 children and youth, transformed 50 government schools, 200 anganwadis, and employed 500 teachers.
Our work and its impact
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Makkala Jagriti distributed grocery kits to 5000 families and 10,000 children’s learning kits. I believe in giving back to the community and working closely with the children at this NGO has allowed me to connect with them and I have seen their willingness to learn despite their economic constraints. I believe in promoting community cohesion by increasing civic participation and awareness to help alleviate the burdens on the marginalised communities. After spending time with the children at this NGO, I have come to a conclusion that knowledge should be replete in every domain of society and no child must be denied basic education.
How we will utilise these books
Books are a concrete part of the visual and auditory response in a child. Apart from classroom education, reading is an essential part of holistic education. I see the hope and willingness to learn in the children at Makkala Jagriti. Other than improving vocabulary, reading books would help them develop their grammar, hone their syntax and diction, impart morals and values, enhance their creativity and intellect, broaden their horizons, and give them a sense of the real world. There are thousands of children at Makkala Jagriti who would benefit from reading storybooks. Reading will also help them increase their attention span. As a voracious reader, my goal is to inculcate a reading habit in these children and give them a better alternative to watching television and playing video games.
The funds from this campaign will help us get Pratham Books storybooks for the children at Makkala Jagriti and get them started on their reading journeys.
