Who we are
Association of Bhoodan & Community Development (ABCD) was inspired by Gandhian principles and the Bhoodaan movement - the voluntary land reform movement initiated by Gandhi's disciple Acharya Vinobha Bhave. We implement various programmes to help underprivileged families belonging to the Nayakkars, Urali Gounders, and other tribal communities in Karur district in Tamil Nadu.
Our work and its impact
There are 110+ children in Kurumpapatti village in Karur district who cannot read or write at their grade level. Many of them do not know the English or Tamil alphabet well enough to write simple sentences and students in high school find it difficult to solve simple math problems. Moreover, many of them have learning disabilities. Through our Karkalaam: Save Children programme, we address these issues in a safe learning space that includes sensory and visual learning aids. Our team organises classes where, with the help of storybooks and activities, we help the children achieve foundational literacy. Our goal is to increase their interest in academics by providing a well-equipped library filled with storybooks in English and mother-tongue languages.
How we will utilise these books
The funds from this campaign will be used to get Pratham Books storybooks for the library and for the children of Kurumpapatti village. The books will also help children with special needs as they’ll get a chance to engage with colourful picture books. We will hold readalouds at the learning centre and encourage the children to choose their own books. The books will help the children improve their memory, concentration, and understanding capacity. As many of them have a history of malnutrition and trauma, we want to create an environment that’s conducive for learning and work with them on social-emotional learning with the help of Pratham Books storybooks.
We are also working on a Library-on-Wheels programme that will take the joy of reading to children in the nearby villages of Rettiyapatty and Palaviduthi.
