Who we are
The Blue Ladder is a community-based initiative started in March 2021 to create safe and inclusive reading spaces for children from diverse backgrounds in Guwahati, Assam. When children were cooped up at home during the pandemic, we organised virtual reading programmes and partnered with an NGO to set up a free reading space in December 2021. We organise pop-up libraries, storytelling and skill-building sessions in schools and parks to inculcate a reading habit.
Our work and its impact
We reach out to children from low-income backgrounds and underserved communities through various schools and NGOs. We organise in-school sessions where children are part of a reading room, and participate in storytelling sessions, readalouds, book discussions, art and craft activities. We use peer-learning strategies and community-building activities to create an environment where every child feels safe to share their thoughts and ideas.
How we will utilise these books
The funds from our campaign will be used to fill the reading rooms in a cancer ward for children with delightful storybooks from Pratham Books. We will also provide classroom libraries for children from underserved communities in five schools. The multilingual storybooks and our reading interventions will serve as a tool to improve their literacy outcomes and nurture their emotional, cognitive and linguistic growth.
