Who we are
Gandhi Ashram is a Jesuit Educational Institution with a musical twist located in Kalimpong in the Eastern Himalayas. The school was started in 1993 with 13 children and has grown to accommodate 298 students. Music is at the heart of learning at Gandhi Ashram. Students from underserved communities who are enrolled at the school not only receive academic training but also artistic training. The school’s orchestra and choir tour regularly. We provide tuition-free education, one free meal a day and also care for the students’ health as well as that of the community’s.
Our work and its impact
The school has students from LKG up to Class 10. We cater to students from low-income backgrounds and even first generation school-goers. Most of our students find it difficult to focus and do well academically. Therefore we give importance to artistic pursuits that enhance their creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills, as well as help them improve in their academics. We ensure that students complete their schooling up to Class 8 and have opportunities to study further through linkages. We believe that our students will change the realities of their families, become future leaders, and blaze a trail of change for their communities.
How we will utilise these books
The funds raised from the campaign will be used to fill the library at Gandhi Ashram with multilingual storybooks from Pratham Books. Students from LKG to Class 10 will be able to access age-appropriate and colourful storybooks on a variety of themes. The library will be an important resource for interdisciplinary education at the school. The books will be used by English and Nepali teachers to improve the students’ reading and writing skills; they will be used in value education and theatre lessons to improve their storytelling and theatrical skills; and the STEM books will be used in Maths, Science, Health Education, and Social Sciences to widen the students’ horizons.
Please note: We are working on the feature to accept international donations. If you are an international donor, please reach out to us on donateabook@prathambooks.org and we will help you out.
