Who we are
Eden Educational Resource Centre is a volunteer-driven centre in Madurai that works with children from rural and urban areas. We engage them in scientific and art-based activities, traditional games, reading and writing activities, etc. We are affiliated with the Vigyan Prasar NETwork of Science Clubs and our club members have attended the National Children Science Congress for the past ten years. Every year we organise a reading camp in our library.
Our work and its impact
Students have been affected by the closure of schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic. To raise their spirits and morale, we are planning to open eight street libraries in Tirumangalam, Madurai. The libraries can be accessed by anyone and will be maintained by student volunteers. Every month we will discuss the running of the libraries with them, invite suggestions and feedback with regard to the book collection, and encourage them to share their thoughts about the books they read. The libraries will also function as a support centre for Government schools and will be used by students preparing for competitive exams for their higher education. We hope to expand to 20 libraries next year.
How we will utilise these books
With the funds raised from this campaign, we will fill the libraries with multilingual storybooks from Pratham Books. Every school-going child will have access to the books. We also want to encourage students who have dropped out, to return to schools. Through the joy of reading, we hope to improve their reading and writing skills, widen their horizons and give them the confidence to aim high.
