Who we are
Our engagement with Kallukuttai - a squatter settlement situated in a marshland in Chennai, first began during the Covid-19 lockdown in May 2020, while mobilising support for communities affected by the pandemic. The idea of building a learning community emerged during this period, taking the form of evening classes for children, conducted on Gajalakshmi, a community and team member’s terrace. Over the past eight months, the community has slowly evolved to include a library, a tailoring centre for women and computer training classes. We operate out of a modest space consisting of two rooms and a terrace. We are a small team of three members, supported solely by contributions from friends and families.
Kallukuttai Learning Community is an initiative where participants - children, youth, parents, and teachers - are engaged in the practice of learning, questioning, critical thinking and are responsible for creating a learning community together.
Our work and its impact
We have begun with small initiatives that bring together different community members and create opportunities to engage in meaningful dialogue, while at the same time catering to their immediate needs. Through a community library, skill development programmes for women, and learning programmes for children, combined with regular community get-togethers, we hope to create an environment that can support a developing community.
How we will utilise these books
With the funds from this campaign, we will procure multilingual storybooks for children from Pratham Books to be a part of our library. At a time when the habit of reading books is becoming increasingly rare, a library maintained by the community could help introduce reading as an informative and enjoyable habit. Along with building literacy, which is one of the major needs of the community, we feel that reading can open up new worlds and provide a rich medium for children and adults to express themselves in new ways. The library would also serve as a safe space for the community, across age groups, to meet, exchange views and discuss various issues relevant to them.
