Who we are

Project Vivek Vidya, Mobile library services is part of Deepak Foundation’s education vertical. The project aims at catalysing learning competencies among in–school and out of school children in the age groups 6 to 14 years. The project was first piloted at Roha in December 2015 after a local level needs analysis revealed that children from less privileged backgrounds had limited access to quality educational materials or other educational support. The project provides children in age groups 6 to 14 years access to library services along with exposure to special storytelling sessions with activities designed to improve reading comprehension, listening and speaking, writing, imagination and self- confidence. The project is now expanded to Nandesari in Gujarat and to Hyderabad in Telangana. The abrupt closure of schools following the COVID 19 outbreak led to a complete shutdown of all educational activities, but our team has initiated the “Education Unlocked” campaign. Our Vidya Sathis reach out to children in communities and bring them their favourite storybooks at their door step. We have adopted a blended approach that supports children through distance e-Learning and at home direct intervention. Children now have access to storybooks and even if schools are shut, education continues

Our work and its impact

Our main goal is to provide children from vulnerable and less privileged communities access to equitable library and educational support. We use story books of different kinds to catalyse children’s learning competencies. Children are encouraged to read stories, think of different story endings, make presentations of the stories they read through oral or written presentations or even through drawing presentations. This way they are engaged in activities and also develop their language and other competencies. We also encourage parents to support children by encouraging them to read along with the children. Each child receives a library card to borrow books of their choice. We assess children’s reading levels and help them reach grade appropriate reading level. Children read and discuss stories and even make presentations in their school assembly or during special community events. Our targeted outcomes are: 1. To encourage children to develop interest in reading through library services 2. To catalyse children’s learning competencies through blended activity based educational support in language, mathematics, listening and speaking, creativity, social and emotional understanding and self- confidence 3. To mobilise parents to actively support children’s educational outcomes and develop a reading culture in their communities

How we will utilise these books

Until the COVID lockdown lasts, we are distributing books to children at homes through our home to home library lending services which is part of our Project Vivek Vidya mobile library services a programme. Once schools are normalised we have an ongoing storytelling and library services programme that is operational since the past three years at all our project sites in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Telangana and the books would be used in government schools and in the community spaces for children in school and out of school who want to avail of the services. These books are also used in our remedial reading programme activities that we conduct
