Who we are

Do you remember your school library—books lined up one after the other, signs of ‘Silence please’, and a librarian manning the fort? This is a common image one can see in schools, where the library is seen as a space where books are sacred and children are allowed free access to books.

Kalpakta is a humble initiative in the quiet district of Sirsi in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. It is a children’s library with the motto of ‘Every child can learn’. We provide joyful books to children in the age group of 6 to 14 years. It is thus imperative to provide varied kinds of books like-picture books, stories, and bilingual books to these children. Through these books, children not only hone their language skills but a good reading habit also ensure their holistic development—critical thinking, emotional and creative development.

Kalpakta believes that every child, no matter where they come from is able to learn. Hence, this initiative is not only to productively engage children but also to inculcate skills that will assist their learning and development in their lives.

Our work and its impact

Given the background of children, they were not accustomed to reading books every day. Through this initiative, Kalpakta wishes to bridge the gap of access to quality children’s literature and provide the opportunity to children of Sirsi to churn their creativity and imagination.

Kalpakta has been able to provide this access to 40 children till now. These children are regularly attending the library and are not only reading books but also expressing and communicating, which is a crucial skill to develop. Children are not only talking about what books they read but also the how books made them feel and whether they can relate it to their own lives.

Children below 8 years attend the "read aloud" session in groups of 8-10. Read-aloud acts as a useful method to engage children in reading and focusing on illustrations. Children above 8 years read independently and are free to choose books of their interest.

How we will utilise these books

Children of manual workers who do not have access to quality children’s literature and are missing out on their learning due to the pandemic form the target group of this initiative. With the funds raised through this campaign, children of our initiate will have access to more joyful reading books. Children like picture books and they enjoy reading them. We see children take interest and responding well
Your support will come a long way in helping children gain access to more joyful books.
