Who we are
We are raising funds for our project called Sarthak Yellow Room. We set up permanent transformational study centres in the heart of communities. They are painted yellow to add life to the place and thus we call them Yellow Rooms. They aim at providing free of cost education and empowerment to all the children living in that community. We set up Yellow Rooms in urban slums, construction sites and villages.
Our work and its impact
With a vision to have Happy Empowered Children in slums, Sarthak Foundation reaches out to the underprivileged children and change their lives through education and skills. These are the children who face dire financial and situational constraints in urban slums, villages and on construction sites. We work in the largest state of India- Uttar Pradesh, which has one of the lowest literacy rates and one of the highest percentage of child labour. We are a team of 25 full time employees and an advisory board.
How we will utilise these books
We run two projects: 1. Sarthak Yellow Room- Permanent study centres right in the middle of the slums, providing education free of cost to all the children in the community. 2. Sarthak Gurukul- Primary formal rural school with collaborative and cooperative learning environment. Before we started our intervention these children were not going to schools and some of them were addicts of substance and drug abuse. Now these children exhibit good social behaviour and are going to schools. They are the first generation learners. A huge impact can also be seen in communities. Earlier girls were pushed into early marriages but now there is reduction in child marriages in economically marginalised communities. Girls which are the worst effected get equal chances to change their lives meaningfully. A time when children had no exposure are now gaining exposure of the outside world and dream of a better career for themselves. Since the exposure of children in their communities is extremely limited so we focus a lot on giving them the right exposure. Inculcating reading habits at a young age becomes a crucial part of it. We promote that children start reading to expand their horizon. Therefore, the funds that we would get would help us in building a library of Hindi and English in all the 7 Yellow Rooms so that children have access to reading.
