Who we are
Our 142 lchampions of grade 7 hail from an under resourced community in MGR Nagar. Most of their parents are daily wage workers who strive to satisfy the basic physiological needs of their children. Most of our students don’t have access to digital technology and can't afford to buy stationery, slippers and stitch proper uniforms. Despite these unfortunate circumstances, they have big dreams like all children and believe that they are capable of achieving anything. To empower them with the skillset needed to access and analyse any English text, we are in the process of setting up classroom libraries.
Our work and its impact
We are a team of 5 Teach For India fellows who facilitate learning for 142 students of grade 7 in Chennai Middle School, MGR Nagar. We envision our students to be freethinkers, life long learners and self aware individuals who can introspect and drive their learning, who can make their own choices and collaborate with their peers to solve communal problems. We strongly believe in the creative genius of every child and student leadership. We strive to facilitate an environment in which our students can operate at their best selves.
How we will utilise these books
We work on the hollistic development of the child which includes Academic achievement, Values and mindsets, Access and exposure to opportunites. Under Academic achievement, we facilitate enriching learning experiences for our students to equip them with the knowledge and skill set needed to access and intuitively understand the content in Tamil Nadu Government syllabus. Apart from the regular syllabus, we also provide meaningful learning experiences for students in fields like English Literacy, Logical reasoning, Media Literacy and STEAM. Under Values and Mindsets, we incorporate Values and Mindsets in our daily life to ensure that they become an integral part of student’s lives. For example, Integrity as value is practiced in our classes by ensuring that student keep up their word in all circumstances. Under Access and Exposure to opportunites, we provide the students with a plethora of opportunities for them to explore their knowledge, skills and mindsets. Our significant impact has been the improvement in reading comprehension level and our students have demonstrated leadership skills, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. Our significant impact with regard to the community has been the support and belief we have earned over the years from the community we work in. The funds will be utilized for buying books of various genres in English Language and setting up library in 5 classrooms. Since the reading levels of students are diverse, we lay focus on getting books of diverse reading levels.
