Who we are

Do you agree that less exposure of children to English literature prevents them from becoming readers in English language? Children coming to government schools are mostly from economically most backward families. They don’t have access to adequate quantity of books and right amount and quality of coaching. This prevents them from becoming readers. Only 24.5% of children in Grade V can read an English text of Grade II in India. This is an alarming figure. Library for All enhance the English language competencies among children in govt. schools.

Our work and its impact

Library for All (LfA) was started by two alumni of Azim Premji University who are passionate to intervene the learning crisis in public school education in North East states. The program started its first operation in Ukhrul District of Manipur with support from Wipro Limited. Ukhrul is a hilly tribal district of Manipur.

How we will utilise these books

In the last two years, we have covered more than 2000 tribal children in 10 schools, directly impacting more than 800 children in Ukhrul District. Children enrolled in these schools are all from economically most backward families. We either revive or set up library in schools and provide books appropriate to children's reading competency level after each child's baseline assessment. We provide them Library Based Learning mostly using story books provided in the libraries. This year by November there had been an increase of 17% in reading fluency among the treatment children. There is tangible increase in children's vocabulary. Teachers' attitude shifted from completing syllabus to gaining skills appropriate to children's Grade. There is an increase in children's attendance compared to pre-intervention years. We need 1650 books to set up libraries in 10 government schools and replenish stock in 5 government schools in Manipur. 1000 children who are first or second generation learners will have access to the books you donated. Join the movement of making a nation of readers.
